Why Doctors Need a Side Hustle

Everyone has their own reason they need a side hustle. For me, I needed to make some extra cash to support my family. I was a PGY-2 fresh off my surgical intern year and went from an “80 hour” work week to 45 hours. I got half of my life back overnight. The only issue is, I needed to make more money just not work less. I turned to my MD and MPH degrees to find any job that would pay better than my hospital salary. I took jobs in data analysis, ghost writing, manuscript editing, meta-analysis, and many others and quickly created a reputation of getting jobs done quickly and completely. I went from charging $45/hr to $250/hr (as a PGY-2) in less than a year and made enough money to go on to build flipMD.

Interesting work

Instead of endlessly scrolling the internet or Facebook, do something interesting that bends the future of medicine towards currently practicing physicians. Jump on a Zoom call, see, and discuss the newest precision oncology platform before it is launched to anyone else. Most of these jobs are only meant to be done by a select few physicians, we are trying to change this paradigm. Every practicing physician has the expertise and knowledge required to properly consult and provide valuable information to companies within their field.

Extra income

Why not use your skills, knowledge, and training to make money doing interesting projects that only you can do? Earning extra money outside of clinical medicine can open up a lot of different doors, whether you are a resident, fellow, or attending physician. Do you need some extra cash to pay off that last remaining student loan debt? Are you looking to top off your child’s 529? Are you wanting to splurge on that next vacation (post-COVID) but do not have the money in your bank account because of other expenses? We created flipMD to help physicians make a little extra money (hopefully a lot more) without burning out by doing more and more clinical work. We want to let you go home and be home with your family not jumping onto your computer and seeing more patients virtually.

One of the fantastic things about founding flipMD is having the ability to interact with other founders and thought leaders within the health space. Seeing what some companies are creating and how they visualize the future of healthcare is thrilling. From embracing technology to curing cancer to making our lives easier using AI and everything in between. As a physician, you’re uniquely positioned to work with these companies that are going to change the way you practice medicine, why not get involved and have a voice in the tidal wave that is coming for medicine? Startups, med device and pharma are all interested in getting your opinion of their work and the future they are building. Join us and create medicine together.

Gregory Hanson, MD, MPH

Greg is a PGY-4 interventional radiology resident at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia. He graduated from UCLA with his BS in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences before moving across the country to New York City. While in New York, Greg obtained his Master of Public Health degree in epidemiology with an advanced certificate in applied biostatistics. He then went on to do his medical school training at Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire. In June 2018, he started his post-graduate training with a surgical intern year at Jefferson before continuing there for his integrated interventional radiology residency. During his first year of diagnostic radiology, he began offering his services to various clients by any means possible and was able to make additional side income to help support his family through residency training. This is what sparked the idea for flipMD.
